Indigenous law programs
The Australian Government Attorney-General's Department is responsible for the delivery of programs that benefit Indigenous Australians, and for policy advice on Indigenous law and justice issues. These programs are delivered with the assistance of departmental officers in the national network of Indigenous Coordination Centres (ICCs), who work closely with service providers and Indigenous communities.
The Department also assists in the administration of the Northern Territory Agreement made between the Prime Minister and the then Chief Minister of the Northern Territory. The purpose of this agreement was to:
- reduce the number of juveniles entering the criminal justice system, and
- alleviate the language barriers faced by Aboriginal persons.
