Australia's International Transfer of Prisoners Scheme

The International Transfer of Prisoners (ITP) Scheme allows people imprisoned in a foreign country to apply to transfer to their own country to serve the balance of their sentence, provided certain conditions are met.

The ITP Scheme aims to promote the rehabilitation of prisoners and their reintegration into society by allowing them to serve their sentences in their home country, where they can be supported by family and friends.

Australia has established ITP links with over 60 countries.

The International Transfer of Prisoners Act 1997 was passed by the Australian Parliament in 1997 with the unanimous support of all parties. It provides the Federal legal framework for Australia’s International Transfer of Prisoner Scheme.
