Drafting and Making Legislative Instruments Course

The Drafting and Making Legislative Instruments Course is a 1 day course offered by OLDP to any Commonwealth agency that is involved in the development of regulations and other instruments.

The course focuses on providing participants with information and skills to engage effectively in a drafting process that results in high quality, legally effective, plain English regulations and instruments that give effect to the Government’s policy while complying with relevant legislation and broader Commonwealth policies.

The course does not teach participants how to draft instruments.

The course covers:

  • the different kinds of instruments and rule makers
  • basic features of Acts and instruments
  • Acts of general application
  • Senate Standing Committee on Regulations and Ordinances
  • the role of the instructor
  • providing drafting instructions
  • the role of the drafter
  • finalising a legislative instrument
  • Disallowance.

The course is presented by experienced OLDP drafters. It includes information sessions, group discussions, and activities. Participants receive comprehensive course materials that provide a useful reference tool for applying the information and skills learnt back in the workplace.

Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are provided.

Course fees

Full rate for participant: $420 per person

Group rate (for three or more participants from the same agency): $350 per person

Please note that for the group rate, registrations must be submitted together.

Cancellation policy

If you can’t attend, a substitute participant is always welcome. Alternatively, a full refund will be made for cancellations received in writing (letter, fax, e-mail) at least two weeks before the event. If OLDP has to cancel a course because of too few registrations, participants will be offered a rescheduled course or a full refund.
