The Australian Government

The Australian Government's first priority is to keep our community safe from people who seek to do us harm.

The Australian Government works closely with state and territory governments to ensure our police and security agencies have the powers they need to fight terrorism. Terrorism is a global challenge, and we also work closely with our international partners in the region and beyond.

Australia faces national security challenges that continue to evolve, so we keep our legislation and capabilities under constant review to meet these emerging needs. The Home Affairs portfolio helps coordinate an integrated approach to our nation's security.

Key responsibilities of the Australian Government in keeping Australia Safe from terrorism include:

  • maintaining counter-terrorism capabilities and coordination of security agencies
  • maintaining national policies, legislation and plans
  • determining prevention strategies and operational responses
  • supporting states and territories to respond to terrorist threats
  • declaring national terrorist situations with affected states and territories.
