Statistics

Members of the public contact the National Security Hotline by phone, email and SMS.

The types of reports provided to the hotline vary. However, reports typically fall under one of the following categories:

Information

This includes anything related to national security, criminal activity, ethical standards, suspicious behaviour, vehicles or residences, reporting online terrorist/extremist content and other activities. These get forwarded to the relevant law enforcement and security agencies for further analysis. The NSH provides a reporting function and cannot provide advice or information on specific operational or intelligence matters, including the status or outcome of your report.

Assurance

This includes individuals asking about Australia’s national security and counter-terrorism arrangements, requesting information about security for specific events, travel advice or redirection of wrong numbers.

Campaign

This includes reports of suspicious activity where there is insufficient information to provide law enforcement agencies.  Malicious contacts, prank contacts and various types of spam are also included in this category.
